Refund and return semantics

Measure Shopify Agentic Commerce Returns Without Confusing Money and Inventory

A refund is an economic event. A return is a merchandise lifecycle event. A restock is an inventory event. Agent-channel reporting should reconcile them without treating any one as proof of the others.

Current product boundaryThe Shopify monitor operates in read-only OBSERVE during the private pilot. It does not process payments or hold funds.

Post-purchase commerce has more than one state machine.

Refunds can be partial, line-specific, shipping-related, or issued without a physical return. Returned merchandise can arrive before or after a refund, fail inspection, be exchanged, or never be restocked. Quantity fields alone cannot safely reconstruct every outcome.

AgentGateFee keeps economic refund evidence separate from return and inventory evidence, then derives current margin and exposure views from append-only facts. Missing optional return access remains a visible coverage limitation.

Keep financial, merchandise, and inventory outcomes separate.

01

Economic refund

Track money returned

Reconcile refund amounts, currency, transactions, adjustments, and affected lines without assuming merchandise physically moved.

02

Physical return

Track merchandise lifecycle

Record return requests and received quantities when accessible, with status and evidence time distinct from the refund.

03

Inventory movement

Track whether stock came back

Treat restock and inventory adjustments as their own evidence rather than deriving them from a refund or current quantity alone.

Reconcile post-purchase evidence without collapsing it

  1. 01Ingest order and refund changes
  2. 02Identify affected amounts and line items
  3. 03Read optional return lifecycle evidence
  4. 04Read separate restock or inventory evidence
  5. 05Derive current economic exposure
  6. 06Compare declared source cohorts with coverage

Refund rate, return rate, and restock rate are different metrics.

AgentGateFee does not infer a physical return from a refund, infer a refund from returned quantity, or infer a restock from either. Results remain limited to accessible Shopify data and explicitly supplied evidence.

Understand the evidence before changing the workflow.

Does every refund mean a product was returned?

No. Refunds can occur without physical return, and their timing and scope can differ from merchandise movement.

Is return access required for the pilot?

No. It is optional and read-only. Without it, return-lifecycle coverage is lower and that limitation remains visible.

How do returns affect contribution?

Economic refunds update the contribution view, while physical-return and restock evidence provide separate operational context.

Observe the first decision before considering enforcement.
